How Neurofeedback Works

Supporting the brain’s natural ability to adapt and self-regulate

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive approach that provides the brain with information about its own activity in real time. This information allows the brain to make adjustments naturally, helping it function more efficiently over time.

At Brainfit, we use NeurOptimal® Dynamical Neurofeedback®, a system designed to support the brain’s ability to organise and regulate itself — without directing or forcing change.

The Brain Is Always Adapting

The human brain is constantly responding to experience, environment, and internal signals. This ability to reorganise and adapt is known as neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is what allows us to learn new skills, recover from stress, and adjust to changing demands. It’s also the reason that supporting the brain’s functioning can have wide-ranging effects on how people feel and perform in everyday life.

Neurofeedback works by engaging this natural adaptive capacity.

What Happens During Neurofeedback

During a session, small sensors are placed on the scalp to monitor brain activity. These sensors do not send any signals into the brain; they simply read information.

While you relax, listen to music, or watch a film, the system monitors patterns of brain activity and provides subtle feedback in real time. This feedback acts like a mirror, allowing the brain to notice what it is doing and make its own adjustments.

There is no effort required and no tasks to perform. The process is passive, gentle, and non-invasive.

What Makes Dynamical Neurofeedback® Different

Some forms of neurofeedback aim to train specific brainwave patterns or target particular symptoms.

NeurOptimal® Dynamical Neurofeedback® takes a different approach. Rather than directing the brain toward a predefined state, it provides continuous information about changes in brain activity, allowing the brain to self-correct in its own way.

This means:

  • No diagnosis is required

  • No protocols are imposed

  • Each brain responds differently

  • The process supports the brain globally rather than targeting a single issue

This flexibility is what allows the approach to be used across a wide range of ages, goals, and contexts.

What a Session Feels Like

THIS IS A GREAT PLACE FOR YOUR TAGLINE.

Most people experience sessions as calm and relaxing.

You simply sit comfortably while listening to music or watching a screen. Sessions typically last around 30–35 minutes, and there is no recovery time required afterwards.

Some people notice changes quickly, while for others the process is more gradual. Experiences vary from person to person, and the emphasis is always on supporting the brain’s capacity rather than chasing specific outcomes.

What Dynamical Neurofeedback® Can Support

Because Dynamical Neurofeedback® supports the brain’s regulatory capacity rather than targeting specific conditions, people use it in many different contexts, including:

  • Supporting focus and mental clarity

  • Improving resilience to stress

  • Supporting sleep and recovery

  • Enhancing performance under pressure

  • Supporting wellbeing and emotional balance

NeurOptimal® is offered as a supportive approach and may be used alongside other therapies, training, or medical care.

A Safe, Non-Invasive Approach

Dynamical Neurofeedback®:

  • Does not involve medication

  • Does not involve electrical stimulation

  • Does not diagnose or treat medical conditions

  • Can be used alongside other forms of care

The sensors simply read information, and the feedback provided is sensory rather than electrical or invasive.

Why Consistency Matters

Like many forms of training or conditioning, neurofeedback tends to be most effective when sessions are repeated over time. Regular training gives the brain more opportunities to recognise patterns and adjust naturally.

This is why some people choose in-clinic sessions, while others prefer home training for greater consistency and flexibility.

Supporting the Brain Behind Everyday Life

Neurofeedback is not about forcing change or striving for perfection. It is about supporting the brain’s natural ability to adapt, regulate, and function well.

When the brain functions more efficiently, people often find that focus, resilience, and wellbeing improve naturally as a result.
